Cannabis aroma comes from a mixture of volatile compounds. Words such as citrus, floral or earthy describe a sensory impression. They do not identify every chemical in a sample, measure its strength or establish a medical effect.
Our earlier article moved too quickly from smelling flower to claims about healing. This revision focuses on the useful question a sensory description can answer: how do people describe and compare aromas without turning a preference into a treatment promise?
A common vocabulary helps comparisons
A 2025 study developed 25 aroma terms and had a human panel assess 91 cannabis samples. The vocabulary helped distinguish samples, but terpene profiles alone poorly predicted sensory character. For a reader, a description is easier to interpret when it names an observation. “Citrus-like aroma” communicates a perception. “Relieves anxiety because it smells of citrus” adds a medical claim that needs separate evidence.
Different people may use different words for the same sample. A useful description allows that uncertainty instead of implying that a confident observer has measured the composition with their nose.
What a terpene name adds
Terpenes contribute to aroma alongside other compounds. A review of cannabis aroma research describes contributions from multiple chemical groups, including volatile sulfur compounds. Keep three kinds of information separate:

Aroma notes and laboratory measurements can both be informative. They answer different questions and should keep their own labels.
Read the report behind a product description
If a supplier presents a terpene chart, check which product and batch it identifies, who performed the analysis and when. Ask what the units mean and which compounds the test includes. A chart copied from a general strain description does not verify the product in front of you.
For example, a menu may describe a batch as floral while a report lists several measured compounds. You can record both observations without claiming that one proves the other. If the report belongs to another batch, ask for the matching evidence before describing the contents as verified.

Keep sensory notes useful
If you are documenting a sample that you are authorized to handle, use the product identifier, observation date and a few plain descriptions. Record whether the description is your observation, a supplier's statement or a laboratory result. This prevents a later reader from confusing an impression with a measurement.
There is no need to smoke, taste or add a substance to create an aroma record. Avoid home experiments with concentrated fragrance or essential oils. A research preparation is not a recipe for modifying a product.
Take treatment questions to the appropriate evidence
Claims about pain relief, sedation or infection treatment require evidence relevant to the condition and preparation. A compound's activity in a cell experiment is not sufficient to recommend a cannabis product for that purpose.
