A THC percentage describes one part of a cannabis product's composition. It does not establish overall quality, appropriate treatment or how a particular person will respond. Yet the answer is not to replace a potency ranking with another single rule, such as choosing by smell.
For a medical decision, the useful information connects the actual preparation to its source, measured contents, relevant evidence and the patient's care plan. For an operator, it also connects the product to the records required for receiving and dispensing it.
What a potency result does and does not measure
A reported percentage needs a product identifier, batch, test date and units. Check whether a figure describes THC, THCA, calculated total THC or another measure. Ask the laboratory or supplier to explain an unfamiliar label rather than treating unlike figures as directly comparable.
A concentration is not the same as an amount consumed, a measure of contamination or a prediction of therapeutic benefit. Two samples with similar headline percentages can differ in other measured properties and in how they are used.
Read intoxication research within its limits
A 2020 naturalistic study assessed 121 regular cannabis users using flower or concentrates. Higher exposure did not translate into differences on every measure of subjective intoxication or impairment. The participants and setting matter: the study did not establish that higher-potency products are harmless or that the findings apply to inexperienced users. Bidwell and colleagues: intoxication and impairment study.
The earlier version of this article reduced that finding to a broad statement that higher THC did not make people more intoxicated. A reader needs the study design, participant group and measured outcomes alongside that observation. An absence of difference on one measure is not an absence of risk.
Aroma describes a preference, not safety
An appealing aroma can be part of a person's sensory preference. It does not verify the absence of contaminants or establish a treatment effect. Research on the chemical diversity of commercial cannabis also shows why broad product labels should not replace measured composition. Commercial cannabis chemistry study.
Our aroma guide explains the limits of sensory descriptions. Do not abandon relevant laboratory evidence because some reports or marketing claims may be unreliable; check the report and its relationship to the batch.
Build a more useful product record
| Information | Practical check |
|---|---|
| Product identity | Name, preparation, batch and responsible supplier agree across documents |
| Source | The source evidence applies to the operation and harvest concerned |
| Composition | The report states what was measured and uses clear units |
| Contaminants | The relevant tests, results and reporting limits are visible |
| Handling | Storage and expiry information relate to this product |
| Clinical use | The prescribing professional has assessed the preparation and patient |
For example, a certificate bearing a supplier's brand but a different batch number leaves a gap. Ask for the matching record and retain the clarification. A colourful chart or a high price does not close that gap.
Sustainability needs evidence too
Claims about local sourcing, energy use and waste can matter to a buyer, but they are separate from claims about medical effectiveness. Ask what operation, period and measurement support the claim. A local address does not by itself verify where a particular batch was produced.
The Thai sourcing guide explains accepted source routes. The traceability guide shows how to connect those records. Together they provide more useful questions than a “strongest strain” list.
Keep the treatment question in view
If a product is being considered for symptoms, ask what improvement would matter and how benefit and unwanted effects will be reviewed. Do not infer an appropriate dose or a diagnosis from a percentage, a terpene chart or a testimonial.
Revised 6 September 2026. Broad clinical extrapolations and claims that smell alone establishes product quality have been removed.
