Read the maintained guide to current cannabis rulesThis article was first published on 10 July 2025 about a reported trial of Thailand's cannabis-prescription system. The account below separates that announcement from requirements readers should check today.
What was reported in July 2025?
The Nation's report dated 9 July 2025 described a planned test involving 50 patients. It attributed to officials an expected first training group of 1,000 Thai traditional medicine practitioners by 16 July, alongside work on prescription information systems and telemedicine integration.
Those were reported plans. That report does not establish that training finished on schedule, that a national system became operational, or that a particular provider is authorised today. We have not independently verified completion of those milestones.
Corrections to our earlier account
Our earlier article presented a proposed clinic and dispensing-point model as the only explanation for the rollout. That was our inference, not a published legal structure, and has been withdrawn.
It also turned the reported training date into a blanket claim about who could prescribe from 16 July. A training announcement alone does not establish the legal scope of every practitioner. The current official PT33 form identifies the professional categories and requires prescribing to follow the relevant professional guidance.
We have removed unsupported assertions that all existing shops lacked clinic licences or on-site professionals. This article did not establish the status of each business.
Where to check the current requirements
DTAM's 2026 establishment guidance explains establishment categories, staffing and the transition for existing licences. It says existing licensees can continue under their permission until it expires, subject to applicable conditions. Check the particular premises and licence; the 2025 announcement does not settle their current status.
For a patient assessment, use our PT33 preparation guide. For documents at a dispensing business, use the PT27, PT28 and PT33 records guide. Neither an announcement nor a software status replaces the appropriate professional decision and required records.
